Introducing foods in Costa Rica

We walked 1km to the larger grocery store, purchasing only what the six of us could carry. The girls had to eat the ice cream sandwiches immediately!

Costa Rica has lots of super flavorful foods, although they can be mild too. There are so many fresh fruits and vegetables [some I’ll mention later.]

A very common dish is rice and black beans. This is also one of the most traditional meals in Costa Rica. This particular dish is often eaten 3 times a day! I could taste other flavours and spices. I am going to learn how to make Gallo Pinto, (translated to the spotted rooster).  We ate this dish for breakfast this morning with two small corn tortillas and two poached eggs.

Because of the tropical location there are many exotic, fresh fruits and veggies included in the local cuisine.

Some of the fruits that are there are:

– avocados in Costa Rica are firmer than the ones in the USA

– anona is a fruit shaped like a heart, they are also called “the bulloks heart”

– pineapples are super delicious here

– cantalopes  & watermelons are in season around Guanacaste

– soursop was the family favorite juice this morning @ breakfast

– limes: there is a lime tree right outside our kitchen terrace!

– blackberries are a surprisingly popular flavor here

– papayas & mangos are also widely found; mangos are more round and these fruits are often the 1st foods fed to babies @ six months

Well, I am off to the beach. I can hear the waves calling.
