Critters In Costa Rica

IMG_0396

There are plenty of land animals in Costa Rica. We have seen monkeys, lots of stray dogs, and some coatis. The monkeys that you commonly see here are howler monkeys. We saw howler monkeys when it was sunset, as they usually come out around sunrise and sunset. Other monkeys that are in Guanacaste are white faced monkeys, and sometimes spider monkeys. There are lots of stray dogs running around the beach too. Normally the dogs are near restaurants often hoping to get a bite of food, and they look fine, not starved. It makes me feel like my dog is really fat though. Now I’m going to explain what a coati is, because some people may not know. A coati is an animal that looks like a meerkat mixed with an ant eater. I think they are cute and the also look like tiny bears. Coatis come out near the same time howler monkeys come out, so if you’re in Costa Rica, you should look for one. So, monkeys, stray dogs, and adorable coatis, are the land animals we’ve seen in Guanacaste.

There are plenty of bird species in Guanacaste. There are big birds like pelicans, or smaller birds like striped headed sparrows, both of which we’ve seen. I think the most common bird here is a raven like bird. I think they’re everywhere! No seriously, I think there’s going to be a raven-like-bird apocalypse!😦 DUN DUN DUN!!! Well anyways, my favourite bird here is the striped headed sparrow. I like it because it’s cute with its yellow stomach and stripy head. And since I’m talking about things that fly, today I saw a giant butterfly, and it landed on my ankle, and I freaked out. I actiually thought that I’d see more butterflies, so it surprised me when there weren’t that many. So those are some of the things that fly that we’ve seen in Guanacaste.

There are plenty of sea creatures in Guanacaste, though we haven’t seen any yet. There are fish, dolphins, orcas, turtles, there are sharks, manatees, and whales, and otters, and crocodiles. The most common dolphin is a bottle-nose dolphin. The turtles are green sea, Olive Ridley, and leather back turtles. The sharks are white tipped reef sharks. The manatees are West Indian manatees, and are the only Costa Rican mammals who are herbivores,( well they’re actually part herbivore), and they’re endangered.  West Indian manatees live in slow moving shallow rivers, estuaries, saltwater bays, canals, and coastal areas. West Indian manatees eat submerged, emergent, and floating plants.  The whales are humpback whales, the otters are noetropic river otters, and the crocodiles are spectcled caiman crocodiles. Those are some of the water creatures in Guanacaste.

Now, I want to talk about how much people can impact an animals life. For example, a few days ago, we saw a woman feeding an iguana. Personally I think that’s really B. A. D. And I’m not going to leave this statement unsupported. I think it’s really bad because wild animals are used to fending for themselves. If we started feeding them, then they would start relying on humans for food, kind of turning them into domestic animals. We would like to hear your opinions about this too so please leave a comment.

Bye for now Ori
